Equipped with a 395nm UV lamp, you’ll explore the coral reefs and marine life at Koh Ma after sunset. Under the effect of ultraviolet light, certain proteins and pigments found in corals, anemones, fish, and other marine organisms absorb the light and re-emit it as vibrant fluorescent colors—shades of green, pink, orange, or electric blue. This phenomenon, called fluorescence, transforms the underwater environment into a dazzling light show, invisible to the naked eye during the day or under ordinary lighting.

The fluorescence of corals and polyps is a captivating natural phenomenon, revealed only under ultraviolet or blue light.
When you dive or snorkel at night with a 395 nm UV lamp, corals, anemones, sponges, and even some fish light up in vivid, psychedelic colors: greens, oranges, blues, yellows, reds, and purples. More than 180 marine species react to ultraviolet light, transforming the reef into a living kaleidoscope.
This phenomenon is due to the presence of fluorescent proteins and pigments, such as zooxanthellae—symbiotic algae living in the tissues of corals. These micro-algae absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit part of the energy as colored light, visible to the human eye. This process, called fluorescence, is completely harmless to marine life and helps corals make better use of light while protecting their tissues from the sun’s harmful rays.
Fluorescence is therefore much more than just a spectacle: it plays an essential role in the life of corals, promoting photosynthesis of symbiotic algae and protecting the marine ecosystem. Observing fluorescent corals at Koh Ma or elsewhere is discovering a world invisible in white light—a unique and fascinating experience for all sea lovers.
